While all of our outdoor furniture is designed to withstand exposure to natural elements, it’s important for our customers to keep the following in mind:
- No material, whether man-made or natural (including hardwoods, resins, plastics, or metals), is completely weatherproof.
- Prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture, and other outdoor conditions will cause all materials, regardless of their type, to degrade over time – even plastics!
- As the owner of outdoor furniture, it is essential to take proper precautions and maintain a consistent care routine to extend the life of your furniture.
- Please note that any warranties or guarantees provided by our suppliers and manufacturers cover product faults or malfunctions only. They do not apply to natural wear and tear or misuse of the product.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
All hardwoods, including teak, require a thoughtful and consistent maintenance routine.
- Natural Characteristics: Teak is a natural material, and fine cracks, especially in the end grain of components like legs and laminated tops, may develop due to temperature and humidity changes. This process, known as checking, is normal, particularly in heavier pieces, and will not affect the durability or performance of your furniture.
- Weathering: When left outdoors, teak will naturally age and transition from its original color to a soft silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layers fade. We recommend allowing your teak furniture to weather naturally, cleaning it thoroughly once or twice a year with Teak Cleaner to remove dirt. Do not use power washers, as they can damage the wood.
- Oil and Preservatives: Applying teak oil or other preservatives is unnecessary and will not prolong the life of your furniture – it is purely cosmetic. We do not recommend oiling your teak furniture.
- Daily Care: To minimize cracking and checking, it’s essential to wipe down wet furniture daily and avoid letting water pool or puddle on the surface.
- Winter Storage: If you plan to store your furniture during the winter, do so in a watertight shed or garage. However, avoid moving it directly from the garden to a heated indoor space, as the sudden temperature and humidity change could cause the wood to split.
- Using Outdoor Covers: If you use outdoor covers, ensure they are applied periodically and check them daily for moisture buildup. Prolonged moisture accumulation under or on top of covers can create a high-humidity microclimate, leading to warping or cracking. Mould and staining may also occur if furniture is left unattended under covers for extended periods.
- Post-Rain Care: Always wipe down wet furniture immediately after exposure to rain, dew, or frost to maintain its condition.
