Over several years of research, photographer Carolina Arantes has documented the evolving identity of post-immigration generations in Europe. First Génération is a long-term project centered on the first generation of French women of West African descent, offering them greater visibility through intimate portraits and personal narratives. Their voices resonate through the pages, interwoven with archival materials and Arantes’ evocative photography, revealing stories that have long remained in the shadows.
Through this lens, Arantes also reconnects with her own Brazilian heritage, finding echoes of shared histories shaped by colonialism. “This project has broadened my perspective on the world. I hope it helps others—especially those less familiar with these experiences—gain a deeper understanding of our identities and shared humanity. Times are changing. This is a generation that refuses to accept outdated, colonialist views. These women know their worth and the significance of African culture in history,” she reflects.
Featuring texts by Azu Nwagbogu, Maboula Soumahoro, and multiple contributors, First Génération is a vital and thought-provoking work on identity, culture, and the evolving narratives of a new generation.
